The Mariyung trains, named after the Darug word for emu, began passenger service on NSW’s Blue Mountains Line on October 13, 2025, with two 10-car units launching from Lithgow to Central Station.
The inaugural trip included NSW Transport Minister John Graham and local MPs.
Additional train sets are expected by month’s end, with a full fleet of 12 ten-car trains planned by late 2026, replacing older V-sets.
Designed for flexibility, the trains can operate in configurations from four to ten cars, seating over 820 passengers.
Features include digital displays, mobile charging, improved accessibility, luggage and bicycle spaces, and platform-train interface CCTV.
The fleet first entered service in Newcastle in December 2024, with positive initial feedback.
