Katie Mitchell, 53, from Sidcup, south-east London, has become the UK’s longest-surviving heart and lung transplant recipient, marking 38 years since her 1987 surgery at Royal Papworth Hospital—just three years after Europe’s first successful combined transplant.
Diagnosed at age 11 with Eisenmenger Syndrome, a rare congenital heart condition, she faced life-threatening complications by 15 and underwent the rare procedure, which is performed only about five times annually in the UK.
She has since received two kidney transplants and lives a full life, crediting her donor and their family with giving her a “normal life.” Now an advocate for organ donation, she urges people to register on the NHS Organ Donor Register, noting one donor can save up to nine lives.
Her survival offers hope to the 8,124 people currently waiting for transplants, including 12 for heart-lung organs.
Medical experts highlight her journey as a testament to donor generosity, medical skill, and patient resilience.
