A five-day strike by about 31,000 Kaiser Permanente health care workers in California and Hawaii began Tuesday, affecting three San Diego County hospitals: Zion Medical Center, San Diego Medical Center, and San Marcos Medical Center.
The walkout, led by the United Nurses Associations of California/Union of Health Care Professionals, includes nurses, pharmacists, and other staff demanding safer staffing, fair pay, and better benefits.
Picketing is scheduled through Saturday, with hospitals remaining open but some non-urgent appointments and elective surgeries potentially rescheduled.
Kaiser Permanente says it continues negotiations and is prepared to maintain patient care.
