Jefferson County deputies will get advanced medical training to better serve rural areas with limited EMS access.
Jefferson County Sheriff Tom Grimsrud is expanding medical training for deputies to improve emergency response in rural areas with limited EMS access.
Deputies, often first on scene in the county’s remote 1,659-square-mile region, would receive certification to provide advanced care like oxygen administration and airway management.
While three deputies are already paramedics and four to five others are interested, training will start voluntarily.
The initiative, funded by the sheriff’s office, aims to support, not replace, volunteer EMS providers by freeing them for patient care.
Community groups have offered support, and the goal is to eventually train all 32 department employees to enhance survival rates amid staffing and resource challenges.
