India launches $77B hydropower plan in Brahmaputra basin to boost clean energy and counter China’s upstream dams.
India has launched a ₹6.4 trillion ($77 billion) plan to develop 76 gigawatts of hydropower by 2047 across the Brahmaputra basin, focusing on northeastern states like Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, and Sikkim.
The project includes 208 hydroelectric schemes, with 64.9 GW from conventional dams and 11.1 GW from pumped-storage plants, aiming to tap over 80% of India’s untapped hydropower potential.
The initiative, managed by central utilities including NHPC and SJVN, supports India’s goals of 500 GW non-fossil capacity by 2030 and net-zero emissions by 2070.
It comes amid concerns over China’s upstream dams on the Yarlung Zangbo River, which India fears could reduce dry-season flows by up to 85%.
