Five automakers face UK trial over alleged emissions cheating, years after Dieselgate.
Five major automakers—Ford, Mercedes-Benz, Nissan, Peugeot/Citroen, and Renault—are set to face a landmark UK class action trial over allegations of using software to manipulate emissions test results, nearly a decade after the original Dieselgate scandal involving Volkswagen.
The case, the largest in English and Welsh legal history, involves 220,000 vehicle owners and 22 law firms, with all five companies denying the claims.
The original scandal stemmed from the U.S. EPA’s discovery that Volkswagen’s “clean diesel” vehicles emitted far more nitrogen oxides on the road than in lab tests, leading to global penalties totaling around A$57 billion.
Volkswagen has since phased out most diesel passenger vehicles, retaining only a few commercial models in Australia.
The outcome of the UK trial could lead to additional automakers being brought to court.
