A fire destroyed a historic New Zealand LDS chapel on Oct. 12, 2025, but no one was injured.
A fire destroyed the historic Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints chapel in Te Hauke, New Zealand, on October 12, 2025, gutting the 1961–1963 brick building but leaving a portrait of Jesus Christ intact. Firefighters contained the blaze by 8:10 a.m., with no injuries reported as members were watching a recorded general conference. The chapel, a longtime community gathering place for about 100 weekly attendees, was not in use at the time. Church leaders emphasized that lives were spared and urged the public not to enter the damaged structure. Support for rebuilding is being encouraged through services in Waipukurau. An investigation into the fire’s cause is ongoing.
