Environmental groups sue to block 40-year gas project extension, citing climate and cultural harm.
Two legal challenges have been filed in Australia’s Federal Court seeking to overturn the federal government’s approval of a 40-year extension to Woodside’s North West Shelf gas hub, now set to run until 2070.
The Australian Conservation Foundation and Friends of Australian Rock Art argue Environment Minister Murray Watt unlawfully approved the project without properly assessing its environmental and cultural impacts.
They contend the decision failed to consider the project’s full pollution, climate change effects, or the irreversible damage to the Murujuga rock art—a UNESCO World Heritage site with ancient carvings, including the earliest known depiction of a human face.
The groups also claim the minister improperly relied on economic benefits from an unrelated gas project and lacked essential data on emissions and gas processing.
The challenges follow an ongoing state-level lawsuit.
Woodside has not commented.
