Archaeologists found 1817 coin, Native American artifacts, and more beneath burned tavern floor, aiding 2027 restoration.
Archaeologists from Ohio Valley Archaeology Inc. are uncovering rare artifacts beneath the floorboards of the historic Overfield Tavern in Troy, Ohio, during reconstruction after a December 2024 fire.
The ongoing excavation since October 2025 has revealed an 1817 50-cent coin, ceramics, animal-bone utensils, and prehistoric Native American items, offering new insights into the site’s 19th-century use and earlier human activity.
Built in 1808 and listed on the National Register since 1976, the tavern once served as Troy’s first courthouse and a tavern until 1824.
Though the log structure survived, much of the interior and historical collection were destroyed.
The findings are guiding a $1 million restoration project, expected to be completed by 2027, with an architect specializing in log buildings involved.
Officials say the fire has unexpectedly enabled valuable archaeological discovery.
