The Trump administration laid off over 100 SAMHSA workers, disrupting the 988 suicide hotline and mental health programs during the government shutdown.
The Trump administration has laid off more than 100 employees at SAMHSA, the federal agency overseeing the 988 suicide prevention hotline and distributing billions in mental health and addiction grants, as the government shutdown continued.
The reductions, part of a broader workforce cut, occurred late Friday with no public explanation, leaving staff stunned and uncertain.
SAMHSA, which had about 900 employees, has now lost roughly 125, or nearly half its workforce, amid ongoing efforts to restructure federal health programs.
The Department of Health and Human Services blamed the shutdown and cited plans to eliminate what it calls wasteful programs, including proposals to fold SAMHSA’s duties into a new agency.
The cuts also affected the CDC, where some firings were later reversed, raising concerns about instability.
Experts warn the layoffs threaten critical public health services.
