Severn Trent warns UK households to flush only toilet paper, pee, and poo to prevent sewer blockages and environmental harm.
Severn Trent is urging UK households to flush only pee, poo, and toilet paper during its annual Unblocktober campaign to prevent sewer blockages and flooding.
The water company warns that items like wet wipes—even “flushable” ones—and fats, oils, and grease cause thousands of blockages annually, leading to costly repairs and environmental damage.
In 2024, Severn Trent cleared about 30,000 blockages and removed 14 million litres of fats, oils, and grease—equivalent to six Olympic-sized swimming pools—along with 2.5 tonnes of unflushable waste.
These materials can form fatbergs, back up sewers, and end up in landfills.
The company promotes simple habit changes, such as binning wipes and disposing of grease properly, and shares tips through its Sewer Stories initiative.
Residents can find advice and report issues at stwater.co.uk/avoidblockages or by calling 0800 783 4444.
