Scotland’s Finance Secretary says further income tax hikes are unfeasible, urging systemic reform of public services.
Shona Robison, Scotland’s Finance Secretary, has stated the Scottish Government has reached its limit on raising income tax, despite previous increases that generated £1.7 billion for public services.
She acknowledged higher earners in Scotland pay more than their English counterparts, with those earning £125,000 paying up to £5,200 more annually, but said further tax hikes are no longer viable.
Robison called for bold, systemic reform of Scotland’s 133 public sector bodies, urging the next government to reassess what services are truly needed rather than making incremental changes.
Both Labour and the Conservatives have proposed reducing public bodies to cut costs, and the Scottish Government plans to shrink its own civil service, which expanded during the pandemic.
