On October 6, 2025, a 71-year-old lawyer, Rakesh Kishore, attempted to throw a shoe at Chief Justice of India Bhushan R. Gavai during a Supreme Court session, prompting security to remove him.
The act drew widespread condemnation from judicial figures, including CJI Gavai and Solicitor General Tushar Mehta, who called it a serious breach of judicial dignity.
The Supreme Court Bar Association revoked Kishore’s membership and entry rights.
AIMIM chief Asaduddin Owaisi criticized the CJI’s decision not to pursue legal action, arguing it sent a wrong message and highlighted perceived inconsistencies in how cases involving different identities are handled, citing the Babri Masjid demolition and UAPA use against youth.
Owaisi also expressed concern over social media glorification of the attacker.
