Man accused of murder steals ₹30 lakh from jail bank using forged cheques; four implicated, suspect at large.
Ramjit Yadav, a man accused of murdering his wife and released on bail in May 2024 from Azamgarh jail in Uttar Pradesh, allegedly stole nearly Rs 30 lakh from the jail’s bank account using a forged chequebook.
He reportedly used forged signatures and false claims of being a jail contractor to make multiple withdrawals, including a suspicious Rs 2.6 lakh in September.
The fraud was uncovered when the jail superintendent noticed discrepancies and initiated an internal probe.
Four individuals, including Yadav, another inmate, and two jail staff members, were implicated.
Yadav remains at large, and authorities have filed an FIR under India’s Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita for cheating, conspiracy, and breach of trust.
The case has triggered an inquiry into jail financial oversight.
