Kurdish Iraqi leader Shaswar Abdulwahid jailed for 5 months over defamation linked to failed land project.
Shaswar Abdulwahid, leader of Iraq’s Kurdistan Region’s New Generation Movement, was sentenced to five months in prison on defamation charges, following his August arrest over 79 complaints, mainly from investors in his Chavi Land project and government-linked entities.
Court documents reveal 60 properties tied to his companies were seized, with debts exceeding 92 billion Iraqi dinars.
Despite his detention and a hunger strike, Abdulwahid remains active through a seven-member committee overseeing the party, which holds 15 seats in the regional parliament and nine in Iraq’s federal legislature.
The movement, running as a reformist opposition force in disputed territories, accuses the dominant KDP and PUK of using legal actions to suppress its influence during the October 11 parliamentary election campaign.
