Irish PM Martin apologizes for failed presidential bid, resolves rent dispute, and backs Humphreys amid ongoing race.
Irish Prime Minister Micheál Martin apologized for Fianna Fáil’s failed presidential campaign, calling the withdrawal of candidate Jim Gavin “traumatic” and pledging a review of the candidate selection process.
He confirmed a 3,300 euro rent dispute was resolved, with repayment made to Gavin’s former tenant, whom he called a victim.
Martin said he would vote for Fine Gael’s Heather Humphreys, citing the need for international engagement, but declined to campaign for her, calling such direction “arrogant.” Humphreys, now one of two remaining candidates, rejected smear tactics, raising concerns about independent candidate Catherine Connolly’s past actions, including a Special Criminal Court case and parliamentary fund use.
Connolly criticized Martin’s support for Humphreys, highlighting a lack of distinction between the parties.
The race continues ahead of polling.
