Indian opposition parties plan a late October delegation to Ladakh amid unrest, violence, and controversy over activist Sonam Wangchuk’s detention.
Indian opposition parties are considering sending a delegation to Ladakh in late October following violent protests on September 24 that left four dead and several injured.
The unrest, sparked by demands for statehood and Sixth Schedule tribal protections, was led by the Ladakh Autonomous Hill Development Council and Kargil Democratic Alliance.
The opposition, including Congress, CPI(M), AAP, SP, and JMM, has condemned the violence and criticized the arrest of climate activist Sonam Wangchuk under the National Security Act, which allows up to 12 months of preventive detention without immediate trial.
Wangchuk, who ended a hunger strike after the violence, was detained on September 26 amid government accusations of inciting unrest.
The opposition is also backing a judicial inquiry into the use of force and assessing the joint visit, though no final decision has been made.
