Chief Justice of India BR Gavai urged lawyers and judges to prioritize diversity, inclusion, and access to justice at the 38th LAWASIA Conference in Hanoi on October 11, 2025.
Drawing from his own experience as a low-caste individual, he emphasized that the Indian Constitution has enabled dignity and opportunity, calling on legal professionals to uphold equality, combat systemic bias, and ensure justice reaches rural and marginalized communities.
He highlighted the judiciary’s role in advancing social justice through landmark rulings, including women’s permanent commissions in the armed forces, and stressed the need for affirmative action, mentorship, and equitable hiring practices.
Gavai underscored that the law must be a tool of empowerment, not exclusion, and that inclusion requires active effort from those in privilege.
