India stops gold smuggling ring using hidden capsules in transit passengers, arrests 13.
India’s Directorate of Revenue Intelligence dismantled a transnational gold smuggling ring in Mumbai, seizing 10.488 kg of 24-karat foreign gold valued at around ₹12.58 crore during Operation Golden Sweep.
Thirteen people were arrested, including foreign nationals and airport staff, for using transit passengers to smuggle gold hidden in egg-shaped wax capsules inside their bodies.
The operation exposed a network exploiting airport transit routes from Dubai to destinations like Singapore, Bangkok, and Dhaka, with gold transferred to complicit staff in Mumbai before being delivered to handlers and a mastermind based in the city.
The DRI emphasized growing risks from insider collusion and ongoing investigations.
