A £9,475 grant will help UK volunteers protect red squirrels by using thermal imaging and feeders to fight invasive greys.
The Keswick Red Squirrel Group has received a £9,475 grant to help protect endangered red squirrels in the Lake District.
The funds will buy thermal imaging devices and ten large metal feeders to improve detection and control of invasive grey squirrels, which outcompete reds and spread a deadly virus.
The tools will help volunteers work more efficiently in dense woodlands and reduce disease risk.
Cumbria remains one of the last strongholds for red squirrels in England, and the group’s 25 volunteers manage a 12,400-hectare area.
Without ongoing efforts, red squirrels could disappear from northern England.
