A 93-year-old man died at a Illinois jail from Legionnaires’ disease linked to contaminated water, prompting health and safety actions.
James Pate, 93, died on September 30 at Tazewell County Jail while awaiting trial for his wife’s murder.
His death was linked to Legionnaires’ disease caused by legionella bacteria found in the jail’s internal water system, though the external water supply was clean.
The Illinois Department of Public Health confirmed the contamination, prompting the sheriff’s office to provide bottled water, limit mist and steam use, flush and disinfect plumbing, and release eligible non-violent inmates to reduce overcrowding.
The jail is working with health agencies and a specialized contractor to address the issue and prevent future outbreaks.
