Stratford faces winter with 144 homeless households and no shelter, relying on community efforts and outreach.
As winter nears, Stratford’s homeless crisis persists without a dedicated shelter, prompting the Canadian Mental Health Association Huron Perth’s CEO, Catherine Hardman, to urge residents to support the Stratford Connection Centre.
The centre, serving over 5,200 visits in 2024, is coordinating outreach and accepting donations of hygiene items, snacks, coffee, and winter clothing.
A city-led Ending Homelessness Committee is developing a winter plan for council review, amid 144 homeless households across Stratford, St. Marys, and Perth County, including 131 chronically homeless and 29 unsheltered.
Though a September proposal to open a temporary shelter failed, community efforts like blanket distributions continue.
Hardman emphasized that stable housing remains the long-term solution, with ongoing behind-the-scenes coordination needed to address systemic challenges.
