Stephen Penrose fired his appeal lawyers days before a hearing, claiming a letter was sent, but the court found no evidence of it, delaying the case to October 24.
Stephen Penrose, convicted in 2021 of murdering Philip Finnegan in 2016, dismissed his appeal lawyers just before a scheduled Court of Appeal hearing on October 10, 2025.
His legal team said they were unaware of the move, which Penrose claimed was communicated via a handwritten letter dated August 1 and sent through prison channels, though the court confirmed no such letter was received.
Despite previously signing a May letter approving the appeal strategy, Penrose said he was dissatisfied and sought a delay to hire new counsel.
The court called the situation “exceedingly unsatisfactory,” granted the lawyers’ withdrawal, and adjourned the case to October 24, 2025, to verify if the letter was delivered and ensure new representation.
The prosecution and victim’s mother were present, and the case remains under scrutiny.
