Speeding tickets at an Albany intersection surged to 460 in September after cameras were installed to reduce school zone speeds.
Speeding citations at the North Albany Road and Thornton Lake Drive intersection in Albany surged to over 460 in September, coinciding with the start of the school year, after dropping to just eight in August.
Since April, more than 2,000 tickets have been issued at the site due to traffic cameras installed in late 2023 to reduce speeds near schools.
The spike follows a peak of over 680 tickets in April, with numbers fluctuating through summer.
The cameras, which record violations for review before issuing tickets, are also active at the Queen and Elm intersection, where monitoring began this month.
City officials, including Police Chief Marcia Harnden, say speeding near schools remains a top concern, and efforts to improve visibility—such as orange flags and planned flashing lights—are underway.
The city is expanding its camera network, with two additional intersections planned for installation.
