Senate rejects bill requiring approval for Trump's military strikes on Caribbean drug vessels.
On October 8, 2025, the Senate rejected a bipartisan bill that would have required congressional approval before President Trump could use military force against vessels in the Caribbean labeled as "narco-terrorist" by the administration.
The 48-51 vote split largely along party lines, with two Republicans, Rand Paul and Lisa Murkowski, supporting the measure and Democratic Sen. John Fetterman opposing it.
The legislation aimed to limit presidential authority over military strikes against non-state drug trafficking groups, following four unapproved operations that killed at least 21 people.
Critics, including Democrats and some Republicans, warned the actions undermine congressional oversight and may violate international law, while the White House maintained the strikes are necessary to protect national security amid an ongoing conflict with drug cartels.
