A record 62% of Americans say the federal government has too much power, according to a new Gallup poll.
A new Gallup poll released on October 10, 2025, finds that 62% of Americans believe the federal government has too much power, a record high since polling began in 2002 and up from 51% a year earlier.
The survey reveals a significant shift in partisan views, with Democrats now more likely than Republicans to express concern over government overreach—66% of Democrats and Democratic-leaning independents say the government is overly powerful, up from 25% in 2024, while 58% of Republicans and Republican-leaning independents hold the same view, down from 75% last year.
The poll, based on telephone interviews with 1,000 U.S. adults from September 2 to 16, also shows Congress’s approval rating at 26%.
