The Parthenon in Athens is now visible without scaffolding for the first time in decades, following the removal of structures from its western facade by late September.
This marks the first time in about 200 years that the 5th century B.C.
temple’s exterior is completely clear of scaffolding on any side, offering tourists an unobstructed view from street level.
Culture Minister Lina Mendoni called the change transformative, describing the monument as appearing “completely different.” However, the removal is temporary—lighter, more visually compatible scaffolding will be reinstalled in about a month to continue conservation work expected to last until early 2026.
Officials hope the Parthenon will then remain fully scaffold-free.
The Acropolis, Greece’s most visited site, drew 4.5 million visitors in 2024.
The temple was originally built to honor Athena, the city’s patron goddess.
