Over 1,000 Portland-area survivors of Backpage sex trafficking will receive compensation via federal funds from the site’s 2018 shutdown.
The Multnomah County District Attorney’s Office is notifying over a thousand Portland-area individuals who may have been sex trafficked through Backpage.com and CityXGuide, informing them they could receive compensation from federal funds seized after the sites’ 2018 shutdown.
Backpage, which generated an estimated $500 million from adult services, was shut down by federal authorities who called it one of the largest online sex trafficking platforms globally.
Assets, including bitcoin, are now being used for victim support through the Backpage Remission program.
The office is sending letters, providing a dedicated webpage, and offering free legal assistance in a trauma-informed, victim-centered effort to aid survivors’ healing.
