Maryland appoints Michael Jackson as acting state police superintendent effective Nov. 12.
Governor Wes Moore has appointed State Sen. Michael A. Jackson as acting superintendent of the Maryland Department of State Police, effective Nov. 12, succeeding Col. Roland Butler, who will retire on Nov. 1 after leading the department since March 2023.
Butler, the first African American superintendent, steps down amid political shifts in the Moore administration.
Lt. Col. Daniel C. Pickett will serve as interim superintendent until Jackson’s appointment.
Jackson, a former Prince George’s County sheriff and U.S. Marine Corps veteran, brings 22 years of law enforcement experience and legislative leadership to the role.
Governor Moore praised Butler’s legacy of crime reduction and public safety improvements, while noting Jackson will build on that foundation.
