India's Madurai court upholds ban on animal sacrifices and non-veg food at Thiruparankundram Hill, a protected archaeological site.
The Madras High Court's Madurai Bench has upheld a ban on animal sacrifices, cooking, and non-vegetarian food on Thiruparankundram Hill, affirming it is a protected archaeological site under 1908 and 1923 Gazette notifications.
Justice R. Vijayakumar ruled the hill must retain its name as Thiruparankundram, not Sikkandar Malai, and that religious practices must not disrupt the site’s sanctity or public order.
While Muslims may pray at the Nellithoppu area during Ramzan and Bakrid under strict conditions, animal sacrifice remains prohibited until a civil court determines its legality.
The decision reinforces the site’s protected status and balances religious rights with preservation.
