India sends Buddha relics to Russia’s Kalmykia for first-time public display, boosting cultural ties.
On October 11, 2025, India began a historic cultural mission by transporting sacred relics of Gautam Buddha from New Delhi’s National Museum to Elista, Russia’s Kalmykia Republic, for a public exposition from October 11 to 18—the first such event in the region.
Organized by India’s Ministry of Culture and international Buddhist partners, the event features religious services, blessings, and teachings by the 43rd Sakya Trizin Rinpoche.
The relics, enshrined at the Geden Sheddup Choikorling Monastery, were accompanied by a delegation of 11 Indian monks and a set of 108 Mongolian religious texts, the Kanjur, to be presented to nine institutions.
The journey highlights India’s efforts to strengthen ties with Buddhist communities in Russia’s Kalmykia, Buryatia, and Tuva, regions with deep historical links to Indian Buddhist traditions.
