Fifteen Bangladesh Army officers, including high-ranking officials, have been placed in military custody following arrest warrants from the International Crimes Tribunal (ICT) over alleged crimes against humanity, including enforced disappearances during former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s tenure.
The ICT, investigating secret detentions and torture linked to the Awami League regime, has indicted 30 individuals, with 27 being current or former military personnel.
The officers, most serving, are to appear in court on October 22, marking the first large-scale civilian prosecution of active and former security officials in Bangladesh.
The interim government, led by Muhammad Yunus, has received around 1,700 disappearance complaints, and the military has pledged full cooperation with the legal process.
