Alabama's public school enrollment dropped sharply by 5,000 students, possibly due to immigration policies, risking teacher layoffs and federal funding loss.
Alabama is experiencing its steepest decline in public school enrollment in 40 years, with about 5,000 fewer students this year, including roughly 2,100 unaccounted for, mostly Hispanic, according to State Superintendent Eric Mackey.
The drop, possibly linked to the CHOOSE Act and increased immigration enforcement, could lead to 500–700 teacher layoffs and loss of federal funding.
Schools cannot verify immigration status, and final enrollment data is due next Friday.
