University of Newcastle staff to strike Oct. 23 over pay, job security, and workloads amid stalled talks.
University of Newcastle staff will strike on October 23, 2025, for a half-day over unresolved disputes on job security, workloads, and pay, following stalled negotiations.
The National Tertiary Education Union (NTEU) cites years of increasing workloads, job insecurity, and real-terms pay cuts since 2018, amid university plans to save $20.6 million through staff and course reductions.
The strike, involving about 10% of staff, reflects frustration over stalled progress and broader concerns across NSW universities where nearly 1,800 positions are at risk.
While the university says it remains open and expects minimal disruption, it disputes the union’s demand for a 20% salary increase over four years, calling it financially unsustainable.
The university reports a $16.3 million core operating deficit despite a larger surplus that includes one-off funds.
Further industrial action is possible if talks fail.
El personal de la Universidad de Newcastle hará huelga el 23 de octubre por salarios, seguridad laboral y cargas de trabajo en medio de negociaciones estancadas.
