The UK government is expanding its anti-fraud efforts by hiring 5,000 additional investigators for the DWP, backed by new powers from the Public Authorities (Fraud, Error and Recovery) Bill, aiming to save £9.6 billion over five years.
The move targets welfare fraud, error, and debt, with overpayments in 2024/25 totaling £9.5 billion—down slightly from the prior year.
A separate initiative focuses on Child Benefit, deploying over 200 investigators to stop wrongful payments from people who have moved abroad, using travel data to identify cases and aiming to save £350 million over five years.
