Twelve suspects from Kaduna and Katsina states have been arrested in connection with the September 29, 2025, armed robbery and killing of ARISE News anchor Somtochukwu Maduagwu and security guard Barnabas Danlami in Abuja.
Police say the suspects obtained firearms—including a locally made AK-47, pump-action gun, and pistol—from an unidentified arms supplier in the Niger Republic.
They confessed to multiple armed robberies in Abuja’s Katampe, Apo, and Zuba areas prior to the fatal attack.
Shamsudeen Hassan was identified as the gunman who killed Danlami.
A special investigation team led by DCP Aliyu Abubakar used digital intelligence to apprehend the suspects across the FCT, Nasarawa, and Kaduna states.
Recovered items included weapons, ammunition, and stolen property.
Authorities continue investigating the arms supply chain and urge the public to report suspicious activity.
The case underscores persistent challenges with cross-border arms trafficking, with Nigeria estimated to hold 70% of West Africa’s illicit small arms.
