In Zanzibar, Tanzanian women are transforming the seaweed industry into a sustainable economic force, aided by training from China’s Fujian Province.
Led by Semeni Mohammed Salum, the Wakulima Hai cooperative—over 80% women—produces value-added marine products like soap and hair oil, supports 23,000 farmers, and boosts annual seaweed output to over 12,000 tonnes.
Though cultural resistance to marine foods persists, the initiative has improved livelihoods, funded education, and empowered women through Chinese-influenced techniques and entrepreneurship programs.
