A robotic underwater glider named Redwing, developed by Teledyne Marine and Rutgers University, launched on October 11, 2025, from Martha’s Vineyard, beginning a planned five-year, 73,000-kilometer journey to circumnavigate the globe.
Using buoyancy-driven motion, it will travel at about 0.75 knots, collecting ocean data on temperature, currents, and chemistry while passing near key global locations.
The mission, known as the Sentinel Mission, aims to improve climate and weather models, support marine research, and inspire future autonomous ocean exploration.
Engineers and students will monitor and adjust its course via satellite, with data shared globally.
