A Nigerian businesswoman disputes a $97,000 bank overdraft claim, alleging unauthorized account conversion and excessive interest.
Mrs. Udokanma Okonjo, managing director of Fine & Country West Africa, has challenged a $97,000 overdraft claim by Providus Bank, calling it false and alleging the bank unilaterally converted her debit account to a credit facility without consent.
Her legal team says over 70% of the debt consists of unapproved interest, cites threatening messages from the bank, and claims inconsistent statements from bank staff.
A Federal High Court previously ruled in the bank’s favor but reduced interest to 10%.
An appeal is pending, with a stay of execution motion set for October 28, 2025.
Okonjo’s team is pursuing redress through courts and the Central Bank of Nigeria, citing broader concerns about banking transparency and consumer rights.
