An 18-month-old Labrador named Dexter, rescued by Dogs Trust in January, has joined Wiltshire Police as a fully trained specialist search dog.
Selected for his strong work drive and focus, Dexter completed rigorous training through the Animal Welfare Visitors Scheme, a national program ensuring high welfare standards for police dogs.
He now serves alongside his trainer, Cindy Hargreave, after living with her during early development.
Wiltshire Police, which joined the scheme in 2024, has trained three rehomed Dogs Trust dogs, including Dexter, who is now actively deployed.
Dogs Trust, involved since the scheme’s 2002 launch, highlights Dexter’s success as proof that rescue dogs can excel in demanding service roles.
