Montana opens $25M STEP facility to rehabilitate low-level sex offenders, easing prison overcrowding.
A new $25 million facility called STEP has opened near Anaconda, Montana, to house and treat up to 68 low-level sex offenders for three months to a year.
The program, a partnership between the Montana Department of Corrections and CCCS, focuses on rehabilitation through intensive counseling to reduce reoffending.
Located next to the START facility, it creates 33 new jobs, including clinical positions, and is expected to ease state prison overcrowding.
The first inmates are set to arrive the week of October 13, 2025.
