A man died in a North Dakota rail crossing crash during harvest season, causing a train derailment and fire.
A 33-year-old Colgate, North Dakota, man died Thursday morning in a collision with a BNSF train near Page, when his southbound combine struck the westbound train at a rural railroad crossing on 133rd Avenue SE.
The impact caused the lead locomotive to catch fire and led to the derailment of about 20 train cars, spilling cargo into nearby fields.
The train’s engineer and conductor escaped unharmed.
The roadway was closed for 34 to 48 hours, and authorities are investigating the crash, which highlights safety risks at rail crossings during harvest season.
