KiwiRail sold its retired Aratere ferry to a buyer for recycling in India, ending its 26-year service on Cook Strait.
KiwiRail has sold the retired Interislander ferry Aratere to a buyer who will transport it to a recycling shipyard in India, following its retirement in August 2025.
The 26-year-old vessel, which served Cook Strait since 1999 and made over 53,000 crossings, was retired early to support port upgrades for two new rail-enabled ferries arriving in 2029.
Due to its age, outdated design, and need for specialized port facilities, Aratere was deemed unsuitable for continued service.
KiwiRail conducted environmental due diligence and is working with New Zealand’s EPA to ensure safe, responsible recycling.
Onboard materials have been repurposed or donated.
The sale marks a step in KiwiRail’s fleet modernization.
