Je Vang, 49, sentenced to 5.5 years for fentanyl trafficking after fleeing before trial.
Je Vang, 49, of Kitchener, was sentenced to 5.5 years in prison for possessing fentanyl for trafficking after evading authorities for nearly three years following his failure to appear for a trial in Sarnia, Ontario.
He was arrested in April 2021 with his wife, Thao Cha, during a search that uncovered drugs and a sword in their stolen vehicle; Cha was later acquitted.
Vang, who had been released on bail but fled before his trial, was arrested on unrelated charges in Kitchener-Waterloo and pleaded guilty via video.
Justice Jason Howie imposed the sentence, aligning with both sides' recommendations, and urged him to seek treatment, citing a prior drug conviction and history of non-compliance with rehabilitation orders.
The prosecution said a trial conviction could have resulted in up to 7.5 years.
