India has launched its National Red List Roadmap 2025–2030 to assess extinction risks for about 11,000 species—7,000 plants and 4,000 animals—aligning with global biodiversity goals.
Unveiled at the IUCN World Conservation Congress by Union Minister Kirti Vardhan Singh, the initiative, led by the Zoological and Botanical Surveys of India with IUCN-India and the Centre for Species Survival, aims to create a science-based, coordinated system for monitoring species status.
The effort supports India’s commitments under the Convention on Biological Diversity and the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework.
It includes training 300 assessors, forming expert groups, building a national database, and publishing Red Data Books by 2030.
The country, a megadiverse nation with four global biodiversity hotspots, will also integrate traditional ecological knowledge into conservation.
