Holtec withdrew its plan for a New Mexico nuclear waste storage site amid state opposition, despite federal approval.
Holtec International has abandoned its proposal to build a temporary spent nuclear fuel storage facility in southeastern New Mexico, citing an "untenable path forward" despite a favorable U.S. Supreme Court ruling and federal regulatory approval.
The decision follows strong opposition from New Mexico’s Democratic governor, Michelle Lujan Grisham, and the state legislature, which passed laws blocking local permits until a permanent nuclear waste repository is established.
The company plans to redirect its efforts toward states more receptive to hosting nuclear waste.
The move underscores the ongoing national impasse over safely managing roughly 100,000 tons of spent fuel accumulated at U.S. reactor sites since the 1980s, with no permanent disposal solution in place.
