Canada’s new projects office can’t bypass West Coast tanker ban; pipeline reviews take 4–5 months, Alberta seeks rule changes.
Dawn Farrell, head of Canada’s new Major Projects Office, told MPs that the office cannot automatically bypass the West Coast tanker ban, as it’s not listed in Schedule 2 of the Build Canada Act, which governs fast-tracked approvals.
She confirmed 500 projects are awaiting review, with nine under assessment, and estimated pipeline reviews would take four to five months.
Alberta’s premier seeks to submit a new pipeline by spring, contingent on federal changes to environmental rules, including the oil and gas emissions cap, though Ottawa has not committed to repealing it.
Officials say talks with Alberta are ongoing, but no promises have been made.
