Austria’s data protection authority has ruled Microsoft’s 365 Education software unlawfully tracked students by using cookies to collect browser data for advertising, violating EU privacy laws.
The privacy group Noyb, led by Max Schrems, filed a 2024 complaint alleging widespread data collection across Europe.
The regulator ordered Microsoft to provide users, including minors, access to their personal data.
Noyb criticized Microsoft for lack of transparency and shifting responsibility to schools.
Microsoft said it will review the decision and maintains its platform complies with GDPR.
The case is part of Noyb’s global effort, which has led to over 800 GDPR-related complaints.
