Assam's CM warns of demographic shift, citing projected 38% Muslim population, and announces bills to protect indigenous rights.
Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said on October 10, 2025, that upcoming census data shows the Muslim population, especially the Miya community, is projected to rise to 38% from 34.22% in 2011, potentially making them the largest group in the state.
He warned of challenges to indigenous communities and announced two new bills in the upcoming assembly session to protect Jati (caste), Maati (land), and Bheti (foundation).
Sarma emphasized the need for a decade-long effort to address demographic changes.
The remarks were made during the Mukhyamantri Mahila Udyamita Abhiyan, where he distributed ₹10,000 seed funds to over 14,000 women entrepreneurs.
