The IUCN Red List, updated October 10, 2025, reveals that Arctic seals—hooded, bearded, and harp—are facing heightened extinction risks due to rapid sea ice loss from climate change, with the hooded seal now classified as endangered.
Over half of global bird species are in decline, driven by deforestation, agriculture, and habitat destruction, especially in Madagascar, West Africa, and Central America.
Of the 172,620 species assessed, 48,646 are threatened with extinction.
However, the green sea turtle has been downgraded from endangered to a less severe status due to successful conservation efforts that boosted its population by 28% since the 1970s.
